YouTube SEO Guide: Leading YouTube Search Rankings

Before I share these tips, you need to understand that YouTube SEO  has its own algorithm to rank videos. Even if you buy inorganic YouTube traffic, it will not ensure that you will rank higher organically.

One of the well-known factors of high ranking YouTube videos is view time. If a user starts watching your video and leaves within the first few seconds, your ranking will likely go down. So, I assume you are already trying hard to use an attractive thumbnail to create compelling YouTube videos and get more CTR from related and embedded videos.

Now, let’s look at some of the most important YouTube SEO tips that will help you get more organic visits to your videos.

   1. Video Title – Use Keywords

The video’s title is How will anyone know what your video is about. A title that perfectly matches your video content will be very friendly to the Audience and the YouTube  SEO.

Take advantage of the Google and YouTube autocomplete features. This will give you an overview of what people are searching for on Google and Youtube and help you optimize your content accordingly.

Here, you can see that YouTube SEO starts suggesting results once I type some keywords. This is because these are the most searched queries regarding your keywords.

Similarly, you can use Google’s autocomplete feature to populate more keyword ideas.

Another way, which is my favourite, is to use TubeBuddy. This tool is a complete SEO tool for YouTube that lets you research topics for YouTube SEO .

Here is how it works:

  • Install TubeBuddy Chrome Addon
  • Click on the Toolbar Icons

Now, use this keyword to create a meaningful video and title to improve your chances of ranking high in YouTube searches.

  1. Description of the video

Write a description of your video content. The first two lines play a major role in ranking your video in search engines.

You can also use search engine autocomplete keyword phrases as your description.

If the searched keywords match the first two lines of your video description, the video is more likely to get a higher ranking.

In the above image, you can see that the my search keyword matches the video’s description, which is in the first two lines. Using the longtail keyword as your video description will also significantly increase your video’s ranking.

  1. Naming Your Video File

You have created and edited your video, and it is ready to be uploaded to YouTube, but you have submitted your video file as mov001.avi or random_name.mp4, make sure you have renamed your video to your_keyword. mp4 is done.

Designating your video file as your focused keyword tells search engines what’s in your video search engines can’t see inside the video content. The file name tells the search algorithm what your video is.

Having a video title as your video file name helps search engines index videos more easily, which helps achieve higher rankings. So put your target keyword in the video file name.

4. Optimizing Existing Videos Using Search Data

This is the golden nugget of optimizing existing YouTube SEO videos.

Click on Analytics > Top Videos

This will bring up a page that shows all the queries users are using to find your video. You need to customize your video title, description and tags based on these questions.

Treat these questions as a keyword for which your video should be optimized.

If you see a question and your video isn’t explaining that part, here are ideas for your next YouTube SEO video.

  1. Use the Closed Caption (CC) feature in your videos on YouTube.

Use YouTube’s Closed Caption (CC) feature. It shows your text on the video, which helps the viewers to understand your video narration better. It can also be translated into different languages to reach more and more people. Uploading the transcript also helps.

The tape contains the text of what was said in the video. YouTube’s new algorithm automatically turns your voice into a transcript that makes it easy to activate.

You can also write a closed caption if your video doesn’t have sound.

Using closed captions provides a new way for a video to get indexed in search engines because of the keywords it contains.

Also, write your transcript in the video description. Your video becomes keyword rich which is very friendly for search engines.

You can also take advantage of a service like Rave to create captions for your uploaded YouTube SEO  videos.

  1. Tagging and Keyword Research for YouTube Videos

Tags are another important way to get a better ranking in YouTube searches. Here are some tips for adding tags to your videos:

  • List specific tags first: Type your main keyword first. Doing so will add weight to the algorithm.
  • List Common Tags: Type common and matching keywords. For example, if your main keyword is “Keyword Research”, common tags could be “Blogging Tips”,  “WordPress Help”, etc.

You can use the Tubebuddy tool, which helps you find the right tags to use with your videos.

It also shows your ranking for particular keywords. This tool is used by many pro YouTubers and is also highly recommended for your YouTube channel.

  • Also, include misspellings of your tag: for example, if you have a keyword as “Real SEO”, enter “Real SEO”. Visit YouTube Analytics and check traffic resources to see how people search for you.
  • Include the singular and plural of your tags. If your keyword is “tattoo art,” also enter “tattoo arts” and separate your keywords into separate tags, such as “tattoos” and “art.”
  • Include phrases such as your longtail keywords in the tag.
